The Numbers Lab

Adding confidence, subtracting frustration.

Math is more than formulas and calculations; it’s a language of patterns, logic, and relationships - a way of thinking that equips students to reason, solve problems, and approach equations with clarity.

Mathematics doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. For many students, math anxiety takes root early - and it can grow fast. But with the right support, every learner can thrive.

Our online math tutoring teaches students to think mathematically and build numeracy skills, turning frustration into understanding, and uncertainty into confidence.

The Lit-Lab Approach

Our math tutors focus on conceptual understanding before computation, helping students see the “why” behind the numbers. Through this approach, math becomes numbers & logic, a tool for problem-solving, and a pathway to math mastery that goes far beyond homework.

  • Our math tutors help students build a strong foundation in early numeracy, developing number recognition, counting strategies, and basic arithmetic skills that set the stage for lifelong math success.

  • Through individualized math tutoring, students gain fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, ensuring they can solve problems confidently and accurately while strengthening mental calculation skills.

  • Our math tutors guide students in understanding fractions, decimals, and percentages conceptually, helping them see the connections between these concepts and apply them in real-world situations.

  • We teach students how to interpret, analyze, and solve word problems, enhancing critical thinking and reasoning skills - key components of advanced mathematical thinking.

  • Our math tutors guide older students through advanced topics. By emphasizing conceptual understanding, problem-solving strategies, and real-world applications, students build confidence, master complex concepts, and prepare for higher-level math tutoring and success in STEM fields.

There’s Levels to Learning

Math for Every Mind

Each student’s math journey is unique because every student learns differently and at their own pace. Some need a boost in confidence, others need to catch up after a tough year, and some are already ahead and ready to advance to more challenging and exciting topics.

Lit-Lab math tutors meet students where they are, providing the support, stretch, and encouragement they need to grow. From building math mastery to exploring the language of numbers to building thinking patterns, we help every learner thrive.

Parents: Part of the Equation

We know it can be difficult to watch your child struggle with math, and sometimes just as challenging to help with homework. That’s why we take on the heavy lifting while partnering closely with parents. Our math tutors provide updates, insights, and actionable feedback, so you can see progress at regular intervals.

By staying informed, you can celebrate victories and watch confidence grow. With parent involvement, progress compounds, making math a more approachable, meaningful, and empowering experience.

The Results Speak: What Parents Are Saying

  • “We’ve tried tutoring before, but nothing changed. At Lit-Lab, I can really see the improvement. Her tutor is patient, encouraging, and know exactly how to explain things in a way that clicks. Homework is no longer a battle.”

    — Nina S., parent of a 6th grader

  • "We were worried about our daughter’s college prep on top of her regular geometry class. Her Lit-Lab math tutor gave her the extra boost she needed. Her grades improved, and she’s entering senior year with real confidence."

    — Priya R., parent of a 12th grader

  • “Before Lit-Lab, math was a constant struggle for my daughter. She would make every excuse and stall out as long as she could to avoid anything with numbers. Now she actually looks forward to her online sessions and doesn't get frustrated when she needs help to understand things."

    — Xiao Z., parent of a 4th grader

  • “My son’s confidence has completely changed. He used to shut down at the first tricky problem, but now he tackles them and even explains his thinking to me. His tutor really makes things clear for him and takes her time until he really gets it.”

    — Anika S., parent of 7th grader

  • "My daughter has always been a strong reader, but struggled with math and numbers. The older she got, the more she gravitated away from STEM until she really started to fall behind. What I appreciate most about Lit-Lab is that her tutor helped change her relationship to math. She might never be a numbers person, but at least now she feels comfortable going into high school math."

    — Stefanie H., parent of an 8th grader

  • "Fractions and word problems used to be a nightmare for my 3rd grader so much that he’d give up. His math tutor explained things in a way that actually makes sense to him. He’s actually keeping up in class now."

    — Rhea M., parent of a 3rd grader

Wondering if math challenges are DYSCALCULIA ?

What Is Dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability that affects how a person understands and works with numbers. It’s not about intelligence or effort - it’s about how the brain processes numerical and mathematical information.

Students with dyscalculia may experience:

  • Number sense challenges: Difficulty recognizing quantities, comparing numbers, or understanding place value.

  • Math fact struggles: Trouble recalling addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts, even when practiced.

  • Problem-solving difficulties: Challenges translating word problems into equations or following multi-step calculations.

  • Time, measurement, and spatial confusion: Difficulty understanding concepts like time, money, measurement, or patterns in space.

Not all math struggles are dyscalculia.
Students may struggle with math for other reasons - such as ADHD, math anxiety, or limited instruction - and lumping all of those under “dyscalculia” can lead to misdiagnosis or ineffective intervention.

Lit-Lab’s full academic assessments can tell you if your student needs standard math remediation or dyscalculia-specific tutoring. Our online assessments identify dyscalculia and other learning disabilities, providing valuable insight into your student’s learning profile and paving a clear path forward with targeted remediation plans.
